Media Daze

The ACC is the next conference in line for the Media Day. As most people would expect the lead story for most new outlets coming out of the the first day is Virginia Tech. The best examples of which are found in the New York Times, and USA Today. No surprise there, because, after all they are the best national outlets for news in the country. There is no disputing the magnatude of what happened in Blacksburg in April. That is why I was a little disapointed to find these two articles this morning. There are plently of other things that could have been written about coming out of the ACC media days. The ACC is one of the more interesting confrences in College Football this season. So many different things are going on in so many different places across the atlantic seaboard. There are all kinds of coaching changes, which usually get prime time coverage at these types of events. Between the most talked about assistant coach in the country, the only interdivisional coaching change in my memory, the promotion of Randy “Bad-Ass Motherfucker” Shannon at Miami, and the return of Butch Davis to College Football. Besides the coaching angle there is alot to write about because, frankly, trying to figure out what will happen in the ACC this year is, like trying to figure out when Lil’ Bush is going to get pulled from Comedy Central. You know someone is going to win the thing, but you have no over whealming inclination as to who that someone may be, and you have even less of an idea awnsering the universal question of why. The league is an absolute crap shoot once again this year. Most people think Virginia Tech and Florida State are the best in the conference. That is not to say that they aren’t without their issues, but that is a subject for another day. The point is that there are a lot of different things that could be topics for pieces, I am dissapointed that the focus has shifted back to Virginia Tech for what happened off the field, what might happen on the field. Which is that the Hookies are a legitimate national title threat, that should be the story at this point. Virginia Tech will be the story of the year and they should be. But I reiterate my fear that the national media will be inclined to flash these clips back in front of our eyes every Saturday for three months. This is not the kind thing that is forgotten. It is one of those rare occassions where everyone knows where they were at, and what they were doing when the news came. There is no need for reminding. There is a need for healing, I don’t think what USA Today and the Time wrote was out of line, but it will only degenearate from there. It always does. The same story and the same message can only be pounded out so many times. Back tommarow, hopefully with something a little more up beat.
